Excision of Facial Tumors

W-Excision

Authors: Anne Mosebo med.stud., Mia Steffenssen MD and Magnus Balslev Avnstorp, MD.

Background

The W-excision is a full-thickness resection used primarily for lower lip lesions. The shape of the W-excision ensures a wider lesion to be resected while avoiding the excision lines to cross the labiomental crease. The excision is closed primarily, normally in three layers with particular attention to re-approximating the orbicularis oris muscle. The procedure results in a Y-shaped scar. The procedure is suitable for tumors on the lip 16-20 mm of length.
